Brotherly love and friendship

Prov 18:24 AKJV A man that has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

There are many topics in the Bible and many sermons that have been preached over the years. Yet, there is one topic that I have not heard much about in churches is friends and friendship.

The Bible has a lot to say about friends, which is something every person needs. No man is an island, and every person needs a friend.

In Prov 18:24, we find wisdom from Solomon about friends and a friend.

It says, “A man that has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.”

There are two things we get from this passage of scripture. One, if you have friends, you must show yourself to be friendly. What does that mean?

Well, if you consider yourself to be a friend, you must be friendly as well. Friendship is a two way street. It is not a one way street! You cannot consider yourself to be a friend, and not be friendly!

Two, Solomon goes to to say, “And there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.”

In other words you can have many friends, but there is a friend, that sticks closer than a brother.” Notice the first part of the scripture says friends, and the second part says a friend. One is plural, the other is singular.

There is always one friend that you consider closer than most. They may even be closer than a blood brother or sister! This is the essence of brotherly love and friendship!

As believers in Christ, or anyone that considers themselves a true friend, we should always strive to maintain brotherly and sisterly love through friendship!
